White Poppy

Featuring a cacophony of melodic guitar riffs, dirty beats and synth sections, White Poppy released Not Not Fun back in 2013 and has recently finished  touring throughout Europe. White Poppy’s transcendental sound draws influence from African guitar and her background as a visual artist. Based in British Columbia, Canada, White Poppy has started to re-define the psychedelic genre, with a tidal layer of sounds engineered by the artist of the band, Crystal Dorval.

White Poppy filters out all sound and draws your focus on the unique distortion and thick texture of the indistinguishable instruments in her albums. They all seem to have an ethereal effect, removing you from consciousness.

white poppyCrystal Dorval is White Poppy. She’s experimenting with ethereal pop, adding reverb and fuzz, and creating something almost cinematic in sound.

Her earlier recordings, including When The Blue Turned Yellow has a cleaner, thinner realm of sound, featuring a tribal beat, carousel themed guitar riffs and the echoed, and somewhat haunting vocals of Crystal Dorval. The album kicks off with the hypnotically slow track In the Winter and takes you to a cold, silent season, with snowflakes dancing around eerie voices, hollow drum tracks and sustained guitar that continues throughout. The final track Beautiful Shit really sums up the album, which ends on a hopeful note with Dorval’s lyrics announcing that “A season of happiness is here”.

White Poppy’s most recent album Not Not Fun is a much more experimental attempt that blends a shaky range of dissonant tracks, intensifying the somewhat chaotic mixture of sound. The tracks have an airy kaleidoscope of hollowness and with each loop, you are hit with indescribable resonance and warmth. White Poppy still remain in the shadows of fame, yet her recent tour and full-length album debut (recorded in The Noise Floor Recording, Vancouver Island) are certainly expanding her music horizons and removing her from the haven of her bedroom studio. Keep an eye out, Canada.
