Yarra by Jason Winston is a Melbourne love story for the ages

Originally hailing from Melbourne, Jason Winston is an actor-turned-songwriter who’s ready to carve himself a space within Australia’s budding pop music space.

Just over a month ago he dropped his latest, a stirring track named Yarra. And yep – you can bet it’s about a relationship Winston left in Melbourne.

Yarra from rising Aussie songwriter Jason Winston is an emotional tale about the potential energy love can bear – all set against a Melbourne backdrop.

Winston’s career to date has had many faces. As an actor he’s worked on theatre shows and for tv, and now as a musician his live show has taken him from a gig at Sydney Fringe Festival to a recent set at Pop Cherch, a night at Sydney’s Knox Street Bar dedicated to all things pop.

With its big chorus, bigger notes, and danceable rhythms, it’s not hard to imagine Yarra popping off live. Lyrics like “I’ll be Jack and you’ll be Katie/one of your French girls maybe” all but guarantee a good time for all.

Speaking about the relationship upon which he based the song, Winston shared:

“…after a couple of months of seeing each other we hadn’t got to spend a night with each other yet. This song reflects on that night in Melbourne. I wrote it a couple of  months after the fact when I found myself overwhelmed with the dynamics of the relationship”

“I wanted to capture the limitless nature of my connection with this man.”

Yarra follows on from Winston’s debut single Foreverland which dropped earlier this year, another pop-leaning tune featuring some seriously slick syncopated beats and hooks for days. It’s blindingly obvious this talent knows his way around an ear worm, and we can’t wait to hear what he cooks up next.

Yarra is out now. Keep your ear to the ground for an album from Jason Winston later this year.
