If you love a good concept album, or simply love ya footy, then pub rock four-piece You Beauty’s debut LP Jersey Flegg is just for you. Coming from a bunch of well-established Aussie bands like Absolute Boys, Mere Women, Hira Hira and Home Travel, Will Farrier, Flyn Mckinnirey, Joshua Phuah and Kino Verzosa recently channelled their footy passion into their own pub rock opera. Through 10 post-punk and garage rock tracks, we hear the tale of one rugby league legend and his fall from hero to zero.
A love letter to the guts, glory and tears of the rugby league life, You Beauty’s Jersey Flegg is a brilliant pub rock opera and a classic in the making.
Full of league one-liners, sweaty bass lines and lots of Strayan spirit, the tale is told at a crackin’ pace. Opening track, Jersey Flegg, sets the scene on the suburban footy pitch with some greasy guitars and barracking drums. But, post-match, our footy star cops a bunch of flak from his team mates for fucking up on and off the field. With some slacker vibes, Scent of My Youth shows us where it all went wrong for our hero. Failing to impress his alcoholic dad back in the Under 15’s, he’s now a deadset boozer himself.
Enter children’s TV host and love interest Ann Maree who gives our fallen footy star a glimmer of hope (remember Ann-Maree Biggar from Agro’s Cartoon Connection?). But, all goes wrong with the blonde broad and our hero hits rock bottom in rough and rowdy tune Crummy Thoughts. Waking up in the gutter, going to training drunk then spewing in the orange’s bucket, everything comes crashing down. Booted off the team, power plays Healing Spirit and Rabbits show how he sorts his shit out and finally scores redemption in closing track Off the Bench.
Like I said, if you love a good concept album then you gotta check this one out. With all its fair dinkum boozed-up, post-punk idiosyncrasies it’s actually pretty gold, and possibly even better in their limited edition vinyl out now. Better still, catch the four bench warmers on tour this November and hear the fallen footy legend’s tale on your own turf.
