PALMARAMA is the combination of Sydney’s Palms and Newy’s Gooch Palms who are embarking on a national tour beginning tonight (28 Feb) at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. The tour will see the two Palm themed groups take in the sights of WA, Queensland, NSW and Victoria over the next few weeks, joining some of the best and brightest of each city’s local scene for nothing over $15.
Both bands released locally acclaimed debut albums in the middle of last year, Palms’ Step Brothers being almost as good as the Will Ferrel movie of the same name and Gooch Palms’ Novo’s copping a little bit of flak for not living up to their live presence. We loved the album, but if their live show is even better, then you’re all in for a wonderful, wonderful time. Check out Happy’s for Novos and our interview with Palms.
There are nine tour dates over the next month, each show with two support acts, so we don’t really have room to introduce all of them. Instead, we’re gonna showcase some of our favourites:
Hockey Dad will be joining them in Wollongong at Rad, a surfy, reverby garage-punk band who take that tired, early 2010’s pop punk concept but do it so, so well. I’d say that it’s almost worth driving down to the Gong to catch these dudes. Almost. Doctopus, joining the two bands in Perth make swooshing, lo-fi dolewave that remind us of milk crates and corrugated iron, while fellow WA tastemakers Gunns are the west coast version of Hockey Dad. Beachy, garagey, punky, but really not boring, and are joining them in Fremantle.
