A parallel journey across the world for award winning singer songwriter from Brisbane, Timothy Carroll, and guitarist and composer from Melbourne, Oscar Dawson, was a sign that these boys were meant to be a musical duo. The soulfully infused folk rock, alternative country and psychedelic rock sound of Holy Holy is one seriously valuable gem with so much potential yet to be unlocked. After working as volunteers in South- East Asia, the two maintained contact as they worked in separate parts of Europe. Carroll was living in Stockholm and Dawson was in Berlin.
It was a serendipitous meeting in 2011 that led to them demoing songs together. The long distances between the two meant for musical collaborations in apartments, stairwells and studios of the two cities. It was in Europe that the two crafted their debut record. Both of them eventually moved back to Australia where Holy Holy was born under the musical influence of Midlake, Crazy Horse and Band of Horses. The duo were picked up by the Sydney- based label Wonderlick (Boy and Bear, Josh Pyke, The Paper Kites). Their debut single ‘ Impossible Like You,’ was released to critically acclaim in 2013.
Twice as holy and thrice as nice, starcrossed travellers Holy Holy make acoustically inspired indie pop for fans of Neil Young, The Nasho and Bright Eyes.
They have recently released their first EP The Pacific which features tracks, House of Cards and Impossible Like You. Recorded live to tape with producer Matt Redlich (Ball Park Music, Emma Louise, The Trouble With Templeton, Hungry Kids of Hungary, the EP offers the warm and silvery vocals of Carroll combined with the powerful electric guitar melodies of Dawson. Pulsating bass, close harmonies, vibrant percussions, and reverb saturated piano. Their dramatic crescendos feel like a dark and mysteriously daydream of chase, which is rudely awakened by the hauntingly, intense reality of looming danger.
At times their tracks are stripped back and sparse, other times it is euphorically lush. The EP presents an array of sounds that will strike chords in any fans of Neil Young, The National, Midlake or Bright Eyes. In a live setting, the band also features Ryan Strathie (Hungry Kids of Hungary) on drums and Graham Ritchie (Emma Louise) on bass. They have just finished their leg of Ball Park Music’s PuddingHead tour, as supporting acts alongside Papa vs. Pretty. Here’s hoping they announce more shows soon!
