Sydney is a city of labels, tastemakers and party people – at times it seems that there might actually be more labels and musical communities per square metre here than anywhere else in the world. The good thing about that is that they all overlap and intermingle with one another and there’s always a half decent gig going down – as long as you know know where to find it and you’re “mates with one of the dudes”.
No Good are relative newbies on the scene and have already made a bit of a splash with their No Good: Monthly sessions hosted at Newtown’s Cafe Martini with lineups featuring Black Vanilla, Buzz Cull, Jasper Clifford Smith, Simo Soo and many more of the nation’s more intriguing artists. Now for the first time, the burgeoning label has put together a quarterly party titled No Good: Winter – featuring their largest lineup yet.
Going down on Sunday the 8th of June (that’s the Queen’s Birthday long weekend folks) at the Petersham Bowls Club, No Good are bringing a full 21 acts to kick on your three day bender to celebrate Lizzy’s big day. Happy’s favourite quirky electronic looper Rainbow Chan is slotted in as headliner, alongside the vapored-out mumblecore of Yon Yonson, the eclectic punk of Reckless Vagina and the ambient, flowing noises of producer Nakagin.
If you haven’t already gathered from that small list of acts, No Good’s lineup isn’t about pushing a certain sound, nor is it about a label embracing any single aesthetic other than the broadly e-quirky vaporwave vogue. Rather it seems like No Good are simply a bunch of friends, all of whom are making broadly electronic music that will fall on the ears of their good mates and almost purposely slip under the radar of the industry. And that’s a good thing! The industry is boring! The industry is no good! No, wait…
No Good are made up of b00bjob, Jasper Clifford Smith, Maatzi, Simo Soo and Slurs, all of whom will be playing the party as well – Maatzi’s jagged hip-hop party vibes are deserving of a special note – AAFFIRMATIVE {Prod.80sGuy} should prove to be a highlight of the day’s celebrations.
But let’s down to business: thanks to No Good and the Petersham Bowls Club, we’re going to be giving away a double pass to the label’s inaugural quarterly party to one lucky reader. To win, simply hit us up at [email protected] with what No Good things you’ll be up to this weekend. Winners will be announced on Monday (26th May) afternoon.
Of course if you don’t fancy your chances at winning the double pass, you can pick up a couple from Oztix for about $35 a pop. And for a whole 21 acts, $35 is a bloody bargain.
