Many of you have probably never heard of Melbourne’s Blake Paterson, aka Boats; a cool cat that is making some of the smoothest and pleasantly textured tunes around. Boats currently only has two singles under his belt, however his debut EP produced by Rat & Co’s Joshua Delaney is due for an April 17 release. Trust me, if the singles that have been revealed so far are any indication of what’s to come, we’re in for a treat.
Melbourne’s Blake Paterson is set to make waves under his Boats moniker. His gorgeous soundscapes and textures may well leave you breathless.
It seems Boats manages to grasp a vast array of soundscapes and merge them beautifully to capture something rather unique. This is demonstrated flawlessly in his debut single Spider’s Soul. Produced and mastered by none other than Andrei Eremin and Joshua Delaney (whom have both dipped their fingers in the works of Chet Faker and Montgomery), Spiders Soul manages to encapsulate elements of acoustic, electronic, ambient and even psychedelic textures, then harmoniously unify them together into one expansively lucid soundscape. Boats’ experience with electronic music, which perhaps came from his days as a DJ, definitely manages to shine through on this track.
From what I’ve discussed so far, you probably have a rough idea of what to expect from Boats, nevertheless don’t underestimate his ability; yes he has a fascinating and unique sound, however Boats definitely doesn’t constrict himself to any one palate. This was made abundantly clear with the release of his latest single entitled Shallows, a picturesque marriage between folk and ambient textures. Shallows delivers subtle ambient layers, which gradually swell into one cohesive and interminably expansive atmosphere, overwhelming your senses entirely. Boats truly demonstrates his power to not only to create beautiful sound palates but his ability to sincerely engage listeners with his art.
If you are a fan of folk, ambient, alternative rock, or even electronic in some sense you should probably give Boats a listen. He gorgeously provides seamless soundscapes, which may or may not make your body transcend in and out of comprehensible reality. I swear to you, it is essentially impossible not to let everything go and venture into tranquillity while listening to Boats. So if a free therapy session has still left you unconvinced, all I can add is you’ll never know until you try.
