If you’ve ever worked in hospitality, you’d know all about the strange and absurd requests that mark the industry – those things that customers ask for that can be infuriating, confounding and entertaining.
Here is Cake Holes – a photo series by Jo Duck in collaboration with caterers Bompass and Parr that celebrates sploshing in all its glory.
For Bompas and Parr – producers of fine English jellies and curators spectacular culinary events – one of these came in the form of an inquiry about whether they could cater for a splosh party. For those who don’t know what sploshing is, Urban Dictionary defines it as “a sexual/sensual food exchange, in which at least one person covers another person in foods of different tastes, textures, and temperatures”.
At the time they declined, but it did spark an idea. Nine years later that idea came to life in the form of Cake Holes – a photo series created in collaboration with fashion photographer Jo Duck and directed by Australian photographer Nathan Ceddia all about the art of sploshing.
Speaking with It’s Nice That about the series, Sam Bompas, co-founder of Bompas & Parr, explained:
“On the day none of our regular friends, lovers and collaborators wanted to participate as models… so we just put an open call out on Instagram and saw who turned up. A surprisingly large number of people want to spend their Saturday afternoons sitting on cakes and jellies.”
In the series, the photographers captured an array of male and female butts sitting on a variety of desserts. Apparently, after the shoot, Bompas & Parr then got each person to fill out a questionnaire about “their favourite dishes to how they would solve the greatest challenges to humanity today!”
