Kim Yang creates music for the soul. With her ethereal blend of sounds, she creates music that balances delicately between vulnerability and power. It feels simultaneously grounded and exploratory; it’s rooted in acoustic folk, but reaches far wider.
With the release of her debut EP Ocean of Mind, she has immediately established herself as an artist to watch. If you’re not already familiar with this name, we strongly recommend you change that.
On her debut EP Ocean of Mind, Canberra-based singer-songwriter Kim Yang presents a haunting and hypnotic slice of folk magic.
Throughout the new EP, Kim Yang weaves elements of folk, pop, and blues to craft a sound uniquely her own. With spell-binding vocal melodies, and instrumental arrangements that feel equal parts lush and sparse, Ocean of Mind is a slice of pure listening bliss.
Across the EP’s three-track run-time, Yang pulls in myriad directions without ever sacrificing any sonic cohesion. The EP’s title track has a haunting and melancholic energy, but slowly builds into something uplifting. Wake Me Up thrives in its simplicity, with the raw instrumentation highlighting Yang’s vocal performance.
By the time the EP’s closing track Missed Chance reaches its conclusion, you’ll have been roped in completely by Kim Yang’s haunting and hypnotic music.
These are still early days for this Canberra-based artist, but judging by the quality of everything we’ve heard so far, I think we can safely expect plenty more quality tunes. In the meantime, do yourself a favour and listen to the new EP above.
