The Australian Music Prize will return later this year with a new revamped setup that includes an expanded list of judges and 18 artists gunning for the top prize. A $30,000 prize will be awarded to the artist with this year’s best album, according to the judges.
Thelma Plum and Stella Donnelly are amongst the list of names vying for the highly coveted prize. However, lesser known artists are also amongst the list of potential winners, shining a light on some of the lesser known talent in the country.
The 2019 Australian Music Prize will have a bunch of talented Australian musicians vying for $30,000, with new judges and a new setting also a feature of this year’s event.
The judges have already listened to 250 albums, proof of the wide array of work being produced by musicians in Australia today. The judging panel includes music journalists, radio music directors and artists all across the country.
Judging will be based on artistic merit, with no emphasis placed on commercial success whatsoever.
The 30 judges will make a shortlist of nine and then extensively re-listen to those albums before coming to a decision. No doubt, winning this prize will change one artist’s fortunes forever if past evidence is anything to go by. Courtney Barnett won back in 2015 and her career has skyrocketed since then.
