The sequel to Dune has finally been officially greenlit for theatrical release on October 20, 2023!
The theatrical release for Dune: Part Two was negotiated between Legendary and Warner Bros. With no day-to-date HBO Max release as of yet, this film is set to garner box office glory in a purely cinematic viewing.
The release of Dune: Part Two was announced on Tuesday, October 27 through the Legendary and Warner Bros social media accounts.
Director, producer and co-screenwriter Denis Villeneuve created a reboot of David Lynch’s 1984 feature film, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel, telling the whole story across two films.
Dune: Part One debut to $40 million at the box office with $220 million made globally so far. These figures were some of the most impressive to come from box office releases throughout the pandemic, especially considering the film was also released for streaming on HBO Max.
While WarnerMedia didn’t release their streaming numbers, Samba TV reported that 1.9 million Smart TV households watched Villeneuve’s Dune over the weekend.
Villeneuve’s production has been heralded for its spectacular cinematography, breathtaking special effects and emotional storytelling. It’s no wonder the public has decided it should be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Dune: Part One grossed an incredible $5.1 million in previews last Thursday night. Since it was released during a pandemic and alongside a simultaneous streaming release on HBO Max, it’s easy to see how these limitations could have affected the box office success and why Villeneuve would be asking for theatrical exclusivity for Dune: Part Two.
