Mike Flanagan has acquired the rights to Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and is developing a screen adaptation of the iconic book series.
In an interview with Deadline, Mike Flanagan revealed he’s officially creating a series adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, under Intrepid Pictures, a production company he co-runs with Trevor Macy.
According to Flanagan, his TV rendition of King’s iconic book series will span across five or more seasons, in addition to two feature films. Reportedly, he’s already written a pilot script, stating that it was “one of my favourite things I’ve ever gotten to work on.”
Discussing the adaptation project, Mike Flanagan told Deadline, “we’ve been floored and grateful that Stephen King trusts us with such an undertaking, something so precious to him, and we hope to find the right partners to realise it.”
The filmmaker/writer continued: “A project like this, I wouldn’t want to be involved in it at all If we were taking it in a direction that was going to be blasphemous to the Stephen King material, but he’s been very, very supportive and very excited about what we’d like to do with it.”
This new venture follows Flanagan’s recent announcement that he would be teaming up with Amazon Prime Video, once his deal with Netflix was over: “Predating our deal with Amazon, we acquired the rights to The Dark Tower, which if you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life,” he told Deadline.
“We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point—you don’t know. But that’s something we’ve been developing ourselves and are really passionate about finally getting it up on its feet at some point.”
