Wet Leg pay tribute to Alex Turner in BRITs acceptance speech

Wet Leg paid tribute to Alex Turner’s iconic 2014 acceptance speech after winning Best New Artist at the 2023 BRITs.

Just one week after winning two Grammys, indie band Wet Leg were named Best New Artist at the 2023 BRIT awards. Following the win the band took to the stage, acknowledging their label mates Arctic Monkeys in their acceptance speech.

“That rock’n’roll, hey?” Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale began, reciting the opening lines of Alex Turner’s infamous speech, “That rock and roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swap”.

Teasdale then shared her own thoughts on Wet Leg’s win. “No, but in all seriousness, thank you so much. It’s really cool to be doing this on an indie label, shout out Domino. Man, this is so scary”. Teasdale acknowledged all the women involved in the production. “It can feel like such a boys club thing,” she said, “it is a team of women so I really want to shout them out”.

Wet Leg also made their BRITs debut, performing their single ‘Chaise Lounge’ from their self-titled debut album. The band delivered a fairytale performance, surrounded by plants and dancers in animal costumes.

Alex Turner recited his speech, deemed one of the most memorable acceptance speeches, nine years ago after winning Album of the Year at the 2014 BRIT Awards.

“I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that acquiesce to some of its rules. But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever,” Turner said. “Yeah, that rock and roll, it seems like it’s faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it…”
