Tom Kazas has just released his 20th something release Sisyphus Happy. For those who are wondering Sisyphus was a tricky and rather nasty king from the land of the Greek Gods. He’s the gnarly dude that tricked death so that everyone stopped dying. I do remember this one. He pissed off Zeus and as a punishment he was made to roll a huge boulder up a hill. The boulder was enchanted and always rolled back to the start before Sisyphus could complete his task. Others make mention of Sisyphus being a metaphor for the rising and setting of the sun. While Tom gives little hint in his press notes, a couple of spins does reveal a very heart indeed. Thankfully for us Tom finds release in his music.
Sisyphus Happy is a four track EP. There are two songs, each with a remodeled version of itself. Though each pair shares a similar being, one is not simply a cut’n’mash remix of the other. These bifurcated versions explore the alternative directions and possible latent meanings.
Which is the original and which the remodel does not concern Sisyphus. For though it is possible he is in all places at once on that slope, we might rather imagine that these songs place him in the moments between descent and ascent, between then and now. Taking cues from Camus and the personal experience, we must imagine Sisyphus Happy in either or all of these songs.
If you’re a fan of 80’s melancholic introspection then this is EP is for you. It’s four tracks (which claim to be two re-mixes of two tracks but with different names) are a great introduction to the world of Tom Kazas and I for one always look forward to his latest offering. Tom’s been around for a while as a rocker (founding member of the Moffs), and producer. Certainly worth checking out.
