Ragnar Kjartansson is one of the many artists participating in a series of exhibitions curated by Yoko Ono at the Reykjavik Art Museum.
Ono birthed the exhibitions by reaching out to local artists for submissions. One entry was Kjartansson’s – ‘a single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man’s hat’.
And somehow, Ono accepted it.
Resurrecting an ageless gag from an iconic Simpsons episode, Iceland’s Ragnar Kjartansson has submitted a ‘plum in a hat’ to Yoko Ono herself.
Ono’s call for submissions was in-character for Ono: vague and a little off-kilter. Read the letter below:
My dear fellow artists, I want to ask you to supply a vessel for the water to give to specific people, either to heal their minds (such as in the case of warlords), or appreciate their courage in speaking out (such as in the case of grassroots activists). It can also be given to a specific person, people, or the land in desperate need for water (love). You and I will supply the water. Each work will be exhibited in the museum, with the dedication attached to it.
Lets have fun in doing this together.
My love and respect to you.
Yoko
Props to Kjartansson for making the link between the brief and a 1993 Simpsons clip. Left-field thinking at it’s finest.
