Cooking spaghetti with a side of new tunes: a chat with Papa Pilko and the Binrats

Building their reputation upon a particularly swampy breed of blues rock, Papa Pilko and the Binrats have been earning hearts (and sometimes breaking them) upon every live show they play.

Since a few releases and a big tour that wrapped up 2018, the PPBR team have been taking some time in the sun – if what they tell us is true, that is. Before they knock out their first mini-tour of the year including a spot at Manly’s Henry’s Rooftop, we caught up with frontman Papa Pilko for a chat.

New tours and new tunes: we caught up with Papa Pilko and the Binrats to find out what 2019 has in store.

HAPPY: Hey PP, how are things? What are you up to at the moment?

PAPA PILKO: Things are great! Few shows here and there, writing new material, enjoying the ride.

HAPPY: What’s been going on since Go It Alone dropped, when we last spoke? I can only assume you’ve been up to no good.

PAPA PILKO: We had a bit of a break after the tour wrapped up actually, nah we’ve been absolute saints!

HAPPY: It was shortly after that you dropped the first Cooking With Papa Pilko. How was that received, looking back?

PAPA PILKO: That turned out bloody great haha, everyone seemed to really like it.

HAPPY: Episode two, when?

PAPA PILKO: Definitely got to think of another barrel of laughs for sure, hopefully soon!

HAPPY: Is there anyone in the band that’s an unashamedly shitty cook?

PAPA PILKO: Nah we’re all guns in the kitchen.

HAPPY: Speaking of the band, when you were dubbing them the Binrats what else came to mind? PP and the cockroaches?

PAPA PILKO: Haha! Nah I don’t think so, it’s been so long since that name emerged I’m not even sure who, what, where, when or why.

HAPPY: Do you think if you’d given them a nice name, they wouldn’t be as fun?

PAPA PILKO: It’s just a name, no one would come to see ‘Father Pilko And The Leftovers’, or would they?

HAPPY: The Northern Beaches crowd is something to witness, as I’m sure you know. Are you looking forward to the show at Henry’s Rooftop?

PAPA PILKO: Yeah you’re not wrong there! Love them, hopefully we can blow the roof off Henry’s top again April 18th.

HAPPY: It’s been all quiet on the release front for 2019 so far, is there something meaty in the works?

PAPA PILKO: Sure is mate, we’re heading into the studio in a month’s time and these new tunes are pretty different to our previous releases so we’re looking forward to getting them out!
