Allday pines over someone who isn’t what they seem on Access, the first taste of the rapper’s imminent fifth album The Necklace.
Allday has today (February 22) released Access, the first single to be lifted from his just-announced forthcoming album The Necklace.
Written by Allday and produced by Simon Lam, the single sees the Adelaide rapper reflect on themes of nostalgia and introspection against a backdrop of immersive beats and melodies.
In between brooding piano keys and airy backing harmonies, Allday delivers his signature blend of hip-hop cadences peppered with sing-along moments, showcasing perhaps his most stirring vocal performance to date.
In between braggadocious mentions of penthouse apartments and trips to Indonesia, Allday pines over a girl who “ain’t nothing I’ve seen before.”
Access is accompanied by an official music video, which was directed by Harry Deadman and follows Allday as he commutes on subways across New York City.
The clip sees the rapper have a meet-cute at a train station, before the pair meander through neighbourhood parks and share milkshakes.
Access serves as the lead single for The Necklace, Allday’s fifth studio album set for release on August 2.
The Lam-produced project, which marks Allday’s follow-up to 2021’s Drinking With My Smoking Friends, is said to find the rapper in a place of self-realisation, documenting his journeys of growth and self-work over the past few years.
The Necklace was conceived after Allday’s stint at an olive farm in Italy, where he spent some months detached from the music scene and focussing on labouring and the unknown.
The album arrives as a reflection on those experiences, finding Allday with a newfound passion for rap and the fun side of making music.
Allday made his debut with 2014’s Startup Cult and has since emerged as one of Australia’s eminent voices, collaborating with the likes of Mallrat, Troye Sivan and Amy Shark and appearing multiple times on triple j’s Hottest 100.
The Necklace arrives on August 2, but in the meantime, check out it’s lead single Access below.
