Twelve artists from around Sydney will band together next month for Art Battle Sydney, a live competitive painting experience showcasing the best artistic talent Australia has to offer. This will be the first of many events to come, and we’re damn excited.
Founded in New York City in 2001, Art Battle has evolved into an international affair, spanning multiple continents and gracing cities such as Vancouver, Amsterdam and Tokyo. Now in its 17th year, Art Battle is heading to Sydney for the city’s biggest live art event in recent memory.
Artists from around the country will compete for the title of Art Battle extraordinaire in the biggest live art experience of the year.
Artists have 20 minutes to turn their blank canvas into a masterpiece. Winners are picked by the audience; once the 20-minute timer goes off, crowds are instructed to place their votes into ballots next to the easel holding their painting of choice.
It’s a round-robin affair; painters will create the best work they can across three timed rounds, with winners proceeding to the next Art Battle.
While there is no general theme to follow in terms of subject matter, there are a few loose rules: firstly, acrylic paints are the only mediums allowed. No outside reference materials are permitted at the easel, but during the competition, artists may use any non-mechanical tools, including brushes, palette knives, rollers, sponges and tape. Tape, however, must be removed before the end of the round.
All paintings from the night will be available for silent auction when the event comes to a close.
The event, which will be held at Marrickville’s Factory Theatre, is ticketed. Tickets can be purchased online via the Factory Theatre’s website.
And if you’re an artist who wants to put your skills to the test, you can register for Art Battle here.
