Shining Bird are an experimental pop group from Wollongong, NSW. The band share eclectic influences such as Nick Cave, The Triffids, and Beach Boys.
Their 2013 debut album Leisure Coast achieved widespread critical acclaim. Debut single Distant Dream was named Rage TV's Indie Clip of the Week, while it was listed as FBi Radio's third most listened track in 2013. Shining Bird have played alongside acts such as Kurt Vile, Franz Ferdinand, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Drones, Father John Misty along with a slew of East Coast festivals.
Their second album Black Opal again received significant praise with the single Helluva Lotwinning Song Of The Year for FBi Radio's SMAC Awards in 2015. The band returned in 2019 with a nine-minute one take single, Who Are We.
The Australiana credentials of Shining Bird are further-enhanced by the choice of mix engineer. Their longstanding relationship with Tim Whitten, who also worked with '80s-era Australian heavyweights like The Go-Betweens and Hoodoo Gurus is reflected in the gauzy nostalgia of the Shining Bird sound.
Though news on the full album recording front has been slow for the Wollongong six-piece, Shining Bird continues to be a touring juggernaut. 2020 was a quiet year on that front for every band, but as the country begins to emerge from the confines of the pandemic, you'll be sure to see this band on a stage near you soon.
