Baker Boy returns with an incredible rendition of Bernard Fanning’s Wish You Well, featuring the song’s originator, Bernard himself.
Marking his first release since the widely-celebrated debut record Gela in 2021, Indigenous artist Baker Boy returns with an epic adaptation of the 2005 acoustic hit, Wish You Well featuring the song’s creator, and Powderfinger frontman, Bernard Fanning.
His energetic, vibrant hip hop rendition of the classic tune sees Baker Boy get in touch with his nostalgic side. As the rapper explains, “Wish You Well is a break-up track, but it’s all about spreading that love. The original isn’t really usual for Baker Boy – that vibe. So I wanted to kind of make it into a story where I can also apply it differently and make it Yolŋu flavour.”
He continues, “It’s not just in a romantic way, it’s about sharing the love – whether it’s your partner, whether it’s your friends or family… It’s also for the people that are having a hard time right now. I just wanted to spread some love through music.”
Despite the confronting feeling that comes with reimagining such a legendary Aussie hit, Baker Boy was grateful for the assistance of producer, Pip Norman (Troye Sovan, Odette), who he refers to as “100 per cent a genius.”
On working with the legendary Powderfinger frontman, Baker Boy says, “It’s Bernard from Powderfinger and a national treasure, you know? So it was crazy. I was just freaking out a little bit. Then I jumped on a call with him. It was so, so amazing to do the track and make it into a Baker Boy track as well.”
The new release comes shortly ahead of his upcoming performance at SITG and Queenscliff Music Festival. Stream Wish You Well below.
