Kiwi “electric surf poppers” Beachware have returned with Respite – a sweetly saccharine single about a relationship that’s clearly not working, but both parties want to keep it going.
We’ve all been through it some point before – no matter how much we like our significant other, we just don’t get along and we want one night where we don’t have to fight.
“Tonight, I’m just trying to find a little respite when I look in your eyes.” Beachware tackle a relationship that isn’t working out with their sweetly sad new single, Respite.
The bright, mid-tempo track starts off with a soft, percussive drum beat and gently strummed guitars before whispery male vocals take to the stage. He’s reminiscing on the good days of the relationship, when everything was fun.
“Tonight, I’m just trying to find a little respite when I look in your eyes.”
By the time you get to the chorus in all its sweet addiction, you’ll be hitting Respite on repeat – we certainly are.
Female vocals then come in and she sings praises about her beau, before also coming to terms with the fact that she can’t be what he needs.
And if that little bridge after the guitar solo – where the male and female vocals play off each other like they’re talking – doesn’t tug at your heart strings a little, then we don’t know what will!
Respite is a bright, shimmery single about both parties in a relationship coming to terms with the fact that neither can be what the other is looking for.
While the topic itself is a painful one will make anyone want to run rather than face the truth, Beachware approach it the way it should be done – with honest lyrics, pretty melodies and gentle tones that, overall, give the song a bittersweetness that hits you right in the feels.
