Ben Sefton unveils a spooky yet addictive gem: ‘Crush’a tale of obsession or infatuation?

Today marks the debut of a sinister yet catchy gem from singer-songwriter, guitar player, and producer Ben Sefton, aptly titled ‘Crush’.

The song showcases warm rhodes, eerie vocal harmonies, and jumpy flute lines that give off an unsettling, autumnal vibe. Inspired by a chance encounter with a cool, stoner, skater-girl at a local bar, Sefton wrote the song to impress her and was delighted when it led to a night out at a punk show.

However, upon closer inspection of the lyrics, it became apparent that the song could be interpreted as a disturbing tale of an unknown figure with an unwarranted and potentially dangerous obsession with the girl. Sefton assures us he is not a killer, but as a skilled songwriter, he is in the business of telling engaging stories.

The music video for Crush is equally unsettling, following protagonist Clara as she navigates the eerie and abandoned Glad Tidings Camp, tasked with shutting down the summer programming.

The location shoot adds to the video’s atmosphere, with director Aaron Sinclair relishing the opportunity to reference classic ’80s horror films like “Friday the 13th” and “Sleepaway Camp”.

Maggie and Kevin, who play Clara and the creepy caretaker, respectively, lean into the unsettling vibes of the song and video, creating an effectively creepy and subversive experience.

Overall, Crush and its accompanying video are a testament to Sefton’s artistry and the power of well-crafted storytelling.
