Baby Cool begins a sonic and personal journey on “deeply sentimental” debut album Earthling on the Road to Self Love
Baby Cool has released her new studio album Earthling on the Road to Self Love. The nine-track project was previewed by the 2022 singles The Sea, Poison and Magic, as well as this year’s most recent album taster Daydream. Earthling on the Road to Self Love marks the debut offering from Baby Cool, who elsewhere serves as the co-frontwoman of Brisbane band Nice Biscuit.
Speaking of the album in a press statement, Baby Cool (real name Grace Cuell) said Earthling on the Road to Self Love arose from “a love letter on a piece of pink handmade paper.” She continued: “I read the letter to myself every morning. The concept of the album was born from this daily ritual.” Latest single The Sea is accompanied by a music video, which follows Baby Cool as she encounters a clam-like apparition by the ocean.
As its title suggests, Earthling on the Road to Self Love offers a sonic journey of actualisation, discovery and affirmation. “The songs… are deeply sentimental,” Cuell explained. “If in singing these words, I can help others find solace in knowing that we’re all out here flailing about in the cosmos, then it feels good to me.” The debut album coincides with Baby Cool’s string of upcoming shows, which run from late-February to March.
Baby Cool’s next show will take place in-store at Brisbane’s Jet Black Cat Music this Thursday (February 16), where she’ll perform the album in full. Cuell will then launch the project with a headline date at Victoria’s Malthouse Outdoor Stage (March 18), and three additional shows in New South Wales at The Lansdowne and La La La’s (March 25) and Eltham Hotel (April 15).
