Catch a ton of unheard recordings in a brand new David Bowie documentary airing this Saturday

On January 7, David Bowie: The Last Five Years will air on BBC. A follow up to 2013 documentary David Bowie: Five Years which covered the middle of his career, the new doco will explore his last days, his final albums The Next Day and Blackstar, as well as the musical Lazarus.

It features a mix of unseen archive footage, unseen interviews with Bowie, his friends and collaborators, and an exclusive, vocal-only recording of the legend himself performing Lazarus.

David bowie documentary

A brand new David Bowie documentary is coming to the BBC very, very soon, featuring never before-seen footage and exclusive recordings of the late Starman.

For the BBC, January is very much a Bowie month. As the world gathers to celebrate what would have been his 70th birthday with a series of global tribute events, the BBC will be airing this documentary, over 50 years of archived performance clips and a series of radio tributes throughout the month.

In the film Tony Visconti describes Bowie’s recording of Lazarus:

“He would stand in front of the mic and for the four or five minutes he was singing he would pour his heart out. I could see through the window he was really feeling it. The audio picked up his breathing, it wasn’t that he was out of breath, he was hyperventilating in a way, getting his energy up to sing this.”

UK viewers and sneaky internationals can view the trailer here.
