Cecil the Lion may be lost forever but the new Hunting Season EP is here to stay

After spending the last few years touring and playing almost every nook and cranny of Melbourne, including some of its most iconic music venues, it almost felt as though Hunting Season weren’t going to bring us any more new, soul melting tunes. But just before we started to lose faith, they’re back! And if you’re a fan of anything indie, pop or rock, then their fresh EP, Lost Forever, is worth a listen.

Hunting Season Lost Forever

Melbourne five-piece Hunting Season return to the fold with Lost Forever, an EP kissed by warm melodies and intimate indie-pop sensibilities.

The EP harbours strong Boy and Bear and Holy Holy influences, and boasts vocals and melodies that are smooth enough to make just about any chick swoon and develop a 16 year-old girl type crush on these Melbourne boys. Or maybe that’s just me…in a totally non-creepy way mind you. Anyway, after making us wait since their 2013 self-titled debut EP for a follow up, it’s pretty safe to say that after listening to Lost Forever, all has been forgiven.

Starting off their life as a trio, as their sound has progressed and matured Hunting Season are now a five-piece, which can be heard through fuller, more complex melodies and more rock-inspired beats and undertones. The EP is jam packed with upbeat and uplifting pop synths that dance around dreamy guitar riffs and disco drum beats. And although the EP only features four tracks, they make a charming first impression and will linger in your head for hours after you hear them (in a good, not annoying Call Me Maybe way of course).

With the lyrics mainly written by lead singer Matt, the tunes are a collaborative effort and involve input from the whole band. And after recording the EP with Daniel Kelaart (The Paper Kites) at Grafete Studios in Melbourne, it’s pretty obvious that these guys are talented as fuck.

Lost Forever was the EP’s first track to be released as a single, and is the perfect introduction to what the remainder of the EP has in store. The first 12 seconds will make your ears prick up, and as soon as the vocals kick in, you’re hooked. The synths and melodies throw out cool, fun vibes, and it’s one of those songs that can just put you in a good mood.

Like, you’re having a shit day, wondering why it is taking two and a half years longer than it should have to finish your uni degree, and why you’re still stuck working three part time jobs…you know those days? Or is it just me again? Well, give this tune a listen, tell yourself to stop being a whining little bitch and you’ll be sorted with your day back on track.

So if you’re in Melbourne and want a night of no worries and good times, and feel like getting sweaty with some cool dudes while they play some cool tunes, head down to Shadow Electric on August 29 for the Lost Forever EP launch. Or for the rest of us non-Melbourne folk, keep your eyes peeled for a possible tour this summer!
