Celine Dion’s sister, Claudette Dion, opens up about her sisters illness and battle with Stiff Person Syndrome
Celine Dion, renowned for the hit ‘My Heart Will Go On’ had to halt her world tour in December 2022 due to a diagnosis of stiff person syndrome—a rare and incurable neurological condition.
Claudette, 74, expressed the challenges Celine faces in her battle against the debilitating illness, stating, “She’s working hard, but she doesn’t have control over her muscles.”
The heartbreaking reality is that Celine, known for her discipline and hard work, is grappling with a condition that affects her vocal cords and heart muscles. Claudette lamented, “What breaks my heart is that she’s always been disciplined. She’s always worked hard.”
Stiff person syndrome, being a one-in-a-million case, has seen limited research, making it even more difficult for Celine and her family to find effective treatments.
Claudette shed light on the struggle, revealing, “The vocal cords are muscles, and the heart is also a muscle. This is what comes to get me. Because it’s 1 out of a million cases, the scientists haven’t done that much research because it didn’t affect that many people.”
Despite the challenges, Celine’s family charity, Fondation Maman Dion, has become a hub for an outpouring of support from fans worldwide.
Claudette shared, “Some people have lost hope because it’s an illness that isn’t well known. If only you knew the number of phone calls the Foundation gets about Celine! People tell us they love her and they’re praying for her. She gets so many messages, presents, and blessed crucifixes.”
In an earlier statement, Claudette had disclosed that, despite working with “the top researchers in the field,” Celine, at 55, has witnessed minimal improvement in her health.
She emphasized the importance of maintaining hope, stating, “We can’t find any medicine that works, but having hope is important.”
