The worlds of sound and visuals are, for many, inextricable. Music videos, live performances, and press shots all play an important role in enhancing a listening experience, as well as helping to establish a connection between the artist and audience. For emerging artists, working alongside a strong visual director can make all the difference — a piece of music can be taken to that next level.
For West Australian singer-songwriter Emjay Angeni, this came from working alongside Dutch creative Chris Lisa Liefting (Her Name Is Murder Productions). In November, Liefting premiered a music video for Emjay Angeni at the CLIPPED.TV Festival at The Golden Age Cinema in Sydney. Here, both artists’ creative energies were showcased in full.
On her video for Emjay Angeni’s Dreamtime Arrows, Dutch multi-disciplinary artist Chris Lisa Liefting crafts a sprawling, dream-like visual feast.
Emjay Angeni is a Western Australian singer-songwriter, known for her rich tapestry of folk sounds. Paired with Chris Lisa Liefting’s visual imagination, their video for Dreamtime Arrows was expectedly quite phenomenal. Dreamy and graceful, the music video is a subtly powerful visual feast.
Over the course of its four-and-a-half-minute run-time, you’ll be led through a series of hallucinatory dreamscapes. These stunning nature-filled scenes blend perfectly with the song’s delicate and arresting aura.
“The first time I heard Dreamtime Arrows I had my butt sat on the living room floor of Emjay’s home,” Liefting shares. “She played and sang while I recorded on my crappy phone and afterwards I took it with me to one of the coffee places around Margaret River to listen to it over and over and over again. That was September 2018. Today it still makes me feel the same and so much more.”
