It hasn’t been long since we introduced y’all to Melbourne’s twangy slacker-poppers Ciggie Witch, but already the six piece have dropped a new single and are launching it this weekend at the Grace Darling Hotel. Recently featured on indie label Osborne Again‘s May Sampler, Taylor’s Lakes is just too bloody charming for us to ignore.
The dolewave appeal is all there, from the slide guitar to the geographically specific suburb name drops and universal lyrics – I’ve got a steady job and my uni course/ I’m always feeling kinda bored. Who doesn’t man, who doesn’t.
For those of you wondering, Taylor’s Lakes is 23km to the North West of Melbourne’s CBD, making it the geographical equivalent of approximately North Epping for us Sydneysiders but due to it’s relative remoteness from the rest of the city, it might be more culturally equivalent to somewhere like Hornsby.
I’m really clutching at straws here though, I dunno how Melbourne works, I’ve never been to Taylor’s Lakes and there’s a good chance that the suburb was chosen because it rhymes with dinner date.
You can catch Ciggie Witch launch their new single at the Grace Darling Hotel in Collingwood on Saturday the 31st of May. They’ll be playing alongside The Galaxy Folk, who sound almost exactly like Low’s first two sleepy albums. Low are great by the way.
The gig will be part of The Grace Darling’s fifth birthday celebrations, so entry to all shows from tonight through to Sunday will be completely free. Check out some of the other bands playing over the weekend on the venue’s Facebook event, the highlights being Mesa Cosa on the Friday and Chook Race on the Sunday (also a sausage sizzle!)
