Danger Mouse and Jemini: Deliver Hip-Hop Nostalgia with “Brooklyn Basquiat”

Danger Mouse and Jemini announce the long-awaited release of album Born Again by dropping single ‘Brooklyn Basquiat’

Talented producer and musician Danger Mouse and gifted New York rapper, Jemini the Gifted One have teamed up again to release the album Born Again.

It was 20 years ago that the duo dropped their debut album, signifying Danger Mouse’s first release to a record label, ‘Ghetto Pop Life’ which has since been seen as a widely celebrated artifact of the hip-hop scene.

Following the success, Danger Mouse and Jemini jumped back into the studio, finishing their second project in 2004. Since then, it has been put on the back burner while completing other creative projects, until now. The follow-up album, Born Again, will be available to the public from August 25.

The first taste of this highly anticipated record is single Brooklyn Basquiat, which will absolutely leave you hungry for more. Almost a time capsule of a song, Brooklyn Basquiat could be placed in any “Best of 2000s hip-hop” without anyone batting an eye.

Taking different elements from early hip-hop to transport you to the early 2000s, the single is an accumulation of some of Danger Mouse’s other projects such as his work with Gorillaz or MF Doom.

The hypnotising loop of bass and flute locks you into a trance-like state, making you pick out each piece of the song to listen to individually and carefully and appreciating every single creative choice made.

On the family tree of hip-hop, Brooklyn Basquiat is the younger cousin to Biggie’s (always iconic) Hypnotize.

The previously unheard album is said to keep many aspects of the first album; their fun-loving and almost unserious attitude towards their worlds as well as a new-found introspective outlook.

This change of pace is heavily inspired by Jemini’s personal life. Mentions of missed opportunity, time and prison and a struggling relationship with his father make Born Again, at points, seemingly heartbreaking.
