Dedicated to the “sacred flower,” the International Church of Cannabis has just opened in Denver

While we’re still giggling at the revelation William Shakespeare was an avid sesher, the 20th of April 2017 marks the official opening of the International Church of Cannabis.

Aside from Shakespeare, cannabis has been used by many artists for creative enhancement and now a church in Denver has been dedicated to “using the sacred flower to reveal the best version of self, discover a creative voice and enrich their community with the fruits of that creativity.”

Dedicated to the spiritual benefits of the “sacred flower,” members of the International Church of Cannabis called the Elevationists have opened their first colourful church in Denver.

The Elevationists claim there is no “no divine law” and “no authoritarian structure,” confirming to The Huffington Post “there are no Grand Poobah’s or High Priests ― well, we are all ‘high’ priests ― rather, we are all on our own quest to be the best self we can be, and to give back to the community with our talents and labor.”

“Through ritual, guided by spiritual practice, church members use the sacred flower to reveal the best version of self, discover a creative voice and enrich their community with the fruits of that creativity,” according to their website.

Colorado legalised restricted marajuana use for adults in 2012, and Elevationist Lee Molloy told The Huffington Post the church was a legitimate organisation – not just an excuse to smoke weed: “Once we open we will continue to push for volunteering efforts in the community, and we will be offering many of the similar services you may find in any other traditional church.”

The interior has been decorated by artist Kenny Scharf.
