Electronic music pioneer Laurie Spiegel’s groundbreaking debut, The Expanding Universe, is set to be reissued on deluxe triple vinyl.

Spiegel is revered for her groundbreaking computer-based compositional processes. She created The Expanding Universe using an interactive compositional software called GROOVE system at Bell Telephone Labs during the late 1970s.

The album was first released in 1980 and has since been revered as a classic of electronic, ambient, and 20th-century classical music. The track Kepler’s Harmony of the Worlds was even included on the Golden Record launched on board the Voyager spacecraft.

Unseen Records say of the album:

“The pieces comprising The Expanding Universe combine slowly evolving textures with the emotional richness of intricate counterpoint, harmony, and complex rhythms (John Fahey and J. S. Bach are both cited as major influences in the original cover’s notes), all built of electronic sounds.

Each of the included works broke new ground, pioneering completely new methods of live interaction with computer-based logic – ways of creating music that are now reaching the heights of their popularity with Ableton Live, Max/MSP and other interactive music software entering mainstream music production.”

The 19-song version of the album was released back in 2012. However, this edition has been remastered by Spiegel herself and will be the first time most of these songs have been released on vinyl.

Listen to The Expanding Universe below and pre-order the album before its November 16th release here.
