Feel the pulse of Heart People's debut Blue Star

Blue Star, the debut single from brand new Sydney based two-some Heart People starts off sounding like a suicide song- its haunting and a bit detached then a third of the way through the song shifts, it becomes something softer and more vulnerable. The vocals take over and the beat is given a back seat. Blue Star is moody and hypnotic, combining experimental dance elements with a traditional song structure. The track has a sublime element that will have you wishing it went for 20 minutes and not four.

Heart People

Not so much twinkle-twinkle as trippy and ethereal electronica, Blue Star’s Heart People is a fantastic debut.

Heart People consists of Ryan Grieve, of Canyons fame and artist, model, knitwear designer Rachel Rutt. The two met one night when Grieve was DJing and made plan’s to work together in the studio. Grieve initially planned to get Rutt to provide vocals on Canyons music but felt she fit better with some stuff he was working on alone. Heart People thus began as a side project but given the strength of their debut will likely take on a life of its own.

The band say they are inspired by the divine power of nature and the influence it has on their hearts and minds. One can defiantly feel this when listening to Blue Star, which manages to sound pre-historic and space age at the same time.

When talking about the other tracks they have written for an upcoming album Rutt refers to the songs as different parts of the same body coming together. “They are unique but all fit as one”. She also said that before getting involved with Heart People she had never thought about the power of sound before. One cant help but feel that power when listening to Blue Star.

Heart People state that they aim to create a multi-sensory experience, in which their soundscape is enhanced by visual accompaniment. This desire for a melding of sight and sound is achieved in their new film clip. The Blue Star film clip is the result of collaboration between the band, Joy Collective Filmmakers and i-D Australia. The clip features Rutt walking through the absurdly beautiful and vast South Australian Painted Desert wearing an interactive bodysuit that glows and responds to Rutt’s breath. The clip is immersive and feels like a psychedelic western film. It will have you hooked until the end.

Heart People are excited by the vibrations of the Earth and I’m excited by them. Stay on the look out for their forthcoming LP.
