Georgia-Jean

Emerging post-COVID with a dynamic backing band to amass gigs all over Wollongong, indie singer-songwriter Georgia-Jean will release her fourth single, ‘Angelica Green’, on July 14.

Building on the strength of her 2021 EP, Leave Me, and four previous singles released between 2020 and 2022, Jean takes influence from the likes of Meg Mac and Missy Higgins to craft uplifting pop rock.

‘Angelica Green’ immediately grabs our attention with its swirling opening guitar chords, before Jean’s soulful voice enters above a strong R&B groove. When its chorus kicks in with a sudden jolt of rock volume, you can’t help but be captivated by its bold presence.

Halfway through, after some off-kilter rhythmic changes, a crunchy and sunny guitar riff emerges to propel the track into some Motown-like soul stomping with underlaid organ, before building up to an energetic 70s rock breakdown. “You are the sun”, wails Jean for Green, before a big rock ending concludes the track.

To achieve its punch and vitality, Jean enlisted the engineering and production talents of Tim Watt, a collaborator with Flume and Hermitude, before recruiting the mastering skills of Ben Feggans, a collaborator with Sampa The Great and Josh Pyke.

In this fine original effort from a young female artist who once described herself as “just a girl with moody thoughts, writing moody songs”, ‘Angelica Green’ is anything but. With its uplifting rhythms and triumphant choruses, its live delivery might almost remind Jean’s audience members of the immensely buoyant energy of a church’s gospel band.

Through combining a rich variety of personal influences, the Georgia-Jean band have been offering diversity, energy, and soul to many different crowds at venues like La La La’s and Kiama Bowlo.

Consisting of drummer Josh Harris, American keyboardist Martin Sholl, bassist Holly Freeman and Polish guitarist Jonasz Dabrowski, Georgia-Jean’s backing ensemble have been together since January 2022.

“I’m unbelievably grateful for the musicianship and friendship of the band”, Jean remarks. As a song dedicated to friendship itself, “[‘Angelica Green’] is the beginning of big things for 2023”.
