It’s safe to say that any mention of the words ‘indie music’ may leave the jaded music critic sighing heavily. Fear not weary music fan, Clea is the breath of fresh air we’ve been clamouring for. Haunting and irresistible, Clea Pratt brings us a refreshing take on the genre, with only two songs under her belt no less.

Clea dire consequences

Haunting and serene, with only two tracks Brisbane’s Clea already has us on her hook. One listen to Dire Consequences and you’ll be ready to be reeled in.

Hailing from Brisbane, Pratt has always had an affinity for music. Her early interest quickly spilled out into an amass of talent, and has brought us the perfect soundtrack for a crime film. If you’re a fan of Zeferelli then you’ll recognise her vocals from his outstanding single 54321, not to mention she stars in the goofy video as well.

Her latest track, Dire Consequences, provides us with the perfect soundscape for a chase scene. With influences such as Laura Marling and Nick Drake, it’s not hard to see how Pratt came to produce such exhilarating music.

Perfectly placed vocal echoes, up tempo drums and guitar licks set the tone to make you feel as though you’re in 1920’s Darlinghurst, running from the Razor Gang. Dire Consequences has already been added to rotation on Triple J, her upward trajectory isn’t surprising at all.

Pratt’s previous single Polyester is an indication of her staying true to the genre of music she loves, but that she is not afraid to delve in to the new and allow herself growth. Still using the haunting melodies and enticing vocals that we gravitate towards now, however as a lyricist and the continuing complex composition of her songs, she has definitely shown us what she has learnt, and we are crossing our fingers for an EP announcement!

This single is a milestone for Pratt, with her dues being paid all throughout 2015 appearing as a support act and alongside artists such as Harts and Gang of Youths. The tumultuous melody pulls you in instantly, with her strong yet vulnerable voice enticing you to stay for the rest of the song. Pratt shows strong promise with her lyrics, and we can’t wait to see what follows this release and see her growth as both a musician and a lyricist.

If you’re in Brisbane next month, be sure to grab some tickets to her single launch at the Black Bear Lodge in Fortitude Valley on the 2nd March.
