Luke Thomas adopts the moniker Golden Sunbird for his gently crafted ’70s psych-rock meditations, teeming with atmosphere and colour.
Like many others, Luke Thomas found himself a hobby during the first COVID-19 lockdown. After falling in love with the sonic ventures of Pink Floyd, the artist began creating using just an iPhone and GarageBand. However, with the freedom of time and a burst of fresh inspiration, song after song began pouring out of Thomas.
Before he knew it, there was an EP’s worth of tracks under his belt; an EP that provided a “cosmic, sonic journey from start to finish”. Under the moniker Golden Sunbird, the artist has given us our first taste into the project, with single Arrival (Desert Sun).
Arrival begins with a two-chord lull, strummed on a 12 string for added flavour. A spacey theremin joins the fold, incentivising the listener the close their eyes and truly take it all in. The slow tempo is key to the intoxicating feelings this track induces. Once the drums enter and Thomas’s soft, carefully guided lyrics take hold, you’ll be far from home.
“I wanted the music to be able to have a guided meditation and deep relaxation effect on the listener”, Thomas explains. This vision also inspired the artist to create an accompanying visualiser for the single, which ebbs and flows beautifully with the sonics.
For someone only beginning their journey as an artist, Thomas is already carving out a sound that matches his interests, not to mention a feeling that’s genuine and fresh. His upcoming EP, is slated for a November 27th release. Be sure to follow Golden Sunbird’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay updated.
