If Jay ‘Gumby’ Watson is a name you’re not so sure you’ve heard before, then it is certainly one that you will remember and not only because it’s reminiscent of everybody’s favourite green clay man. No? Maybe that’s just me… As one fifth of psychedelic rock group Pond, and as the drummer for the machine that is Tame Impala, Watson is making the impossible possible by bringing even MORE of his undeniable talent into the spotlight through his solo project GUM. No complaints over here.
You’d know Jay Watson from Pond or Tame Impala. Now he’s going down the solo path and working under the name of GUM, with a full length release due this year.
Keeping music lovers well and truly on the edge of their seats, GUM has mastered the art of seduction by teasing his fans with the release of two singles from his upcoming album Delorean Highway. The first, released in 2012, goes by the same name and was inspired by a ‘Back to the Future’ style dream (we’ve all had ’em). GUM’s second single was released at the end of last year, entitled Growin’ Up. The Delorean Highway will be GUM’s full-length debut and consists of 10 little gems written about life, death and love, as well as pretty much everything in between. GUM’s sweetly psychedelic sound is highly evocative of the 60’s Woodstock shit (everyone forgets that real hippies were not as sexy or nearly as clean as the headscarf wearing pinups of today).
The music of GUM is perhaps best described as the sort of thing you’d hear playing if you managed to find your way to the end of a rainbow. To put it simply, it is nek level in the very best way. Amid desperate pleas seeping their way through just about every social media platform readily available to the already extensive GUM fan-base, Spinning Top Music have confirmed that Delorean Highway is set to be released both digitally and physically around the middle of the year. And boy, will it be worth the wait. While GUM doesn’t have any immediate upcoming shows, Growin’ Up and Delorean Highway are both at the ready to aid in the pleasure senses of your pretty little ears. Peace, love and GUM.
