If you’re interested in the music industry and not quite sure what you want to study, the Australian Institute of Music is opening its doors to help you navigate your options.
Narrowing down what you want to do in the music biz can seem daunting, but we’re here to help you through it. Here’s our Open Day guide for Australia’s largest tertiary music institution.
The Australian Institute of Music’s upcoming Open Days will give you a detailed run down of all of their degrees and help you nail your audition.
Explore the campus
Located next to Central station, Sydney’s AIM campus is easily accessible so you can comfortably see what they have to offer. The whole campus has also been recently renovated, so those who head along will be amongst the first to experience all the shiny new facilities.
If you’re in Melbourne, your AIM campus is also super central, located on King St in the city. To really get a feel for either of the schools though, you’ll want to take one of the guided campus tours.
These will showcase AIM’s facilities, studios and equipment, while also holding demonstrations on their apparatus as you go. This’ll give you an idea of what it’d be like to both work and create in those spaces – we’ve been through the Sydney studios ourselves and can attest, they’re killer.
Courses
A big focus of the Open Days is breaking down the criteria for each course, so you know exactly what you’re signing up for. Attendees will be free to discuss a wide spectrum of career paths, specifics on the degrees they’re interested in, and the skills you need to get your dream job.
This includes going through entry requirements, so you can feel confident with your auditions and portfolios. You definitely don’t want to miss that crucial insight if you’re serious about applying.
Lecturers and Alumni
Both Open Days will host an industry panel with successful AIM alumni who are making waves in the music industry. If you want something a bit more directed to your needs, there are workshops with lecturers and one-on-ones with academics from each course, whether it be contemporary or classical.
In addition, be introduced to over 55 industry partners where you can potentially intern or have a placement including Sony Music, Sydney Opera House, Oxford Art Factory, and Universal Music Group.
Performances
Of course, there will be live entertainment performed by current students from a range of courses. Enjoy this break from the info overload, and imagine yourself on the stage (or behind the scenes, if that’s what you’re interested in).
When you see the final product, everything you’ve learnt will sink into place and hopefully, you’ll be able to narrow down those options. Good luck!
