Punk genius Iggy Pop has announced a brand new album is on its way to bless our ears. Entitled Free, it is set to be released on September 6 and follows on from his 2016 record Post Pop Depression.
The iconic musician has already shared a preview of the album, through the release of the meditative title track Free, which features minimal dialogue of Pop saying “I wanna be free”.
Iggy Pop says “I wanna be free” in his new meditative and simplistic title track Free off his forthcoming album. It is set to be released on September 6.
Described as “uniquely somber and contemplative” , the album is sure to be unlike any of his other discography. Working with jazz trumpeter and composer Leron Thomas on the record as well as Noveller, the project of solo guitarist Sarah Lipstate, Pop was in great company during its production.
In a statement he said of the album:
“This is an album in which other artists speak for me, but I lend my voice…By the end of the tours following Post Pop Depression, I felt sure that I had rid myself of the problem of chronic insecurity that had dogged my life and career for too long. But I also felt drained. And I felt like I wanted to put on shades, turn my back, and walk away. I wanted to be free.
“I know that’s an illusion, and that freedom is only something you feel, but I have lived my life thus far in the belief that that feeling is all that is worth pursuing; all that you need – not happiness or love necessarily, but the feeling of being free.
So this album just kind of happened to me, and I let it happen.”
