Introducing: Grace

I’d like to introduce you to the brooding, babin, brunette bombshell, Grace. All the way from the Australia’s west, Grace produces and sings some somber tunes. Her tracks are somewhat modest yet strong, dark yet vivid. To give you a reference, if Kucka was yin then Grace would be yang. A darker dramatic production. To give you another reference, if Daria produced music, this is what it would sound like: clever, black and intense without yelling.

From bluesy folk to dark production, Grace’s organic transition elevates her desirable and dark tendencies, first hinted at in her early acoustic days.

Formerly Grace Woodroofe, she’s ditched the last name as a reflection of her own music evolution and progression. Kind of like before Facebook was “The Facebook” – maybe not – nonetheless she’s moved on from the guitar, folksy, bluesy stuff and electrified, produced and digitised. However her essence remains, with an aching, moody and blue sound. It’s not a complete reinvention, as you can hear reflections of her origins in her transitioned sound .

She started making music at the tender teenage years and has a story that all musicians dream of. She made some tracks, uploaded them to Triple J Unearthed, as you do. She then told a couple of her high school BFFs – one that was actually the sister of Heath “the legend” Ledger! One thing led to another and next thing you know she was flown to LA where she got hooked up with Ben Harper. An album ensued and she’s living the dream!

Grace grew up with strong musical influences such as Neil Young, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Later she would discover diverse sounds and inspirations that have influenced her music today.

The year has certainly been gracious (see what I did there?). She’s opened for music legends alt-j, has another Australian tour next year supporting Glass Animals and the infectious song Pluto is nominated in the Hottest 100.

Pluto paints a dark picture with vivid scenes of desperation and desire. There’s a strong theme of the consuming nature with such words as “drink”, “sweet” and “hunger”. The musical devices also help to create this atmosphere with electro drums, water drop bass and synths. The dynamics burst as the chorus hits and everything escalates. Cosmic and spacious, the song is well deserved for the nomination.

There’s more excitement on the way for Grace as she gets ready to release a new EP. We expect to her more electronica, beats and synths.

Grace is supporting Glass Animals on their debut album Zaba tour.
