PREMIERE: Looking for bright post punk? Look no further than Kelsey Kerrigan and her album Primary Colours

By way of California comes the romantic post punk of Kelsey Kerrigan. Releasing her highly anticipated debut album Primary Colours, Kerrigan curates the collision of sweet and vulnerable musicianship with gritty and fearsome songwriting.

The twelve track record harbours some real treasures, personal favourites include So What, Good Times and Make it Rain. Kerrigan is on the same playing field as Aussie greats Ali Barter, Jack River and Gretta Ray, a bright and powerful female voice.

Kelsey Kerrigan

With sharp guitars, driving melodies and pop beats, Primary Colours by Kelsey Kerrigan is a record that’s both accessible and musically challenging.

The album is one of diversity and although Kerrigan is from the States, she brings an honest and down-to-earth tone to her music which is achingly familiar, an artist we would gladly listen to over and over because she feels like home.

On each track, Primary Colours dives into new corners of Kerrigan’s sound with expansive sonic plains and a genuinely cathartic intent.

As the best intimate pop does, we’re taken through her vulnerabilities and shameful moments. As the artist herself has stated of her work she has been “making sad music sound happy since 1988”.

She pushes boundaries, not confined to any standard set by the track before, rather making each transition as eclectic and refreshing as possible.

It seems we have stumbled upon the real deal in Kelsey Kerrigan, refreshingly wild and honest post punk which doesn’t feel too sweet and sugary, rather clearly articulated and intelligent.  This album is an absolute triumph and one which showcases Kerrigan in the perfect light.

Although we are a little disappointed we can’t claim her as a homegrown hero, she’s based in California and when it comes to future shows we highly recommend you check them out if you are in town, particularly if you’re missing home.
