Fans left disappointed as Lauryn Hill’s Diaspora Calling! festival abruptly shuts

The Mis-scheduling of Lauryn Hill

Seeing Lauryn Hill live has the upside of being able to witness one of the most influential musicians in neo-soul and hip hop to ever grace the wide green earth.

But the downside, and a long standing one of that, is waiting an hour or several for Ms Hill to grace the stage well past the set time.

Now the star has caused further disappointment in the live music space, due to her usual antics.

Over the weekend, Lauryn Hill’s ‘Diaspora Calling!’ festival was abruptly shut off right as fans were about to hear Ms Lauryn Hill and The Fugees launch into ‘Fu-Gee-La’.

After showing up late to the stage at 10pm, headliners Lauryn Hill and Wyclef reunited once again while joined by Erykah Badu, Giggs and YG and Zion Marley (sons of Ms Hill).

Then at 11pm, while Ms Lauryn Hill tried to address the crowd over a shut off microphone, the massive concert screens displayed a simple but disappointing announcement.

“THANK YOU EVERYONE”. We’re sorry for the abrupt finish. As part of our licence we are legally required to finish the show at 11pm and cannot continue beyond this time.”

What was supposed to be a major collective moment of celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Fugees’ second album The Score ended with a dissatisfying premature conclusion.

Fans have been completely devastated despite being used to these type of circumstances from the rap icon.

What put more salt in the wound was the fact that the show was supposedly due to go on for two hours with further guest appearances from the likes of Little Simz, Gunna and Tiwa Savage.

After music lovers experienced mass abandonment at the Blue Ridge Rock Festival and the logistical nightmare of the Fyre Festival, fans have placed the Diaspora Calling! festival under the ‘worst festival ever’ category.
