Meduulla interview

Teaming up with creative mind Laura Loughridge, the duo crafted a visual masterpiece that echoes the essence of early 2000s R&B videos.

From the streets of Manchester to boats on the river, Meduulla reveals how they stumbled upon hidden gems and pulled off some guerrilla filming magic.

Join us for a behind-the-scenes journey, as Meduulla shares her inspirations, from classic TLC videos to cinematic gems like “Honey” and “Love and Basketball.”

Happy: Can you walk us through the creative process of bringing the concept of the music video to life?

Meduulla: I teamed up with a really talented creative director called Laura Loughridge and I gave her a back story to the song.

I also told her that I was a big fan of the feeling captured in Joey Badass’s Show Me music video.

After that, we mapped out some shot ideas and she sent me a treatment of all the ideas we discussed.

Happy: It holds a very classic 90s R&B feel, do you have any fav vids from that era?

Meduulla: It’s more so the early 2000s videos that I grew up with. I love the video for TLC’s No Scrubs and any Missy Elliot Video, they were so ahead of their time.

Happy: Were there any specific challenges you faced during the planning stage?

Meduulla: Yes, as an independent artist, I was balling on a budget. I had to think of the best way to make a high quality video whilst keeping the production costs low.

Luckily the team I was working with was able to do a lot with a little so we made it work.

Happy: How did you go about choosing the locations for filming the music video?

Meduulla: Honestly, Manchester has so many hidden gems, so it’s literally a case of thinking about picturesque places I have been to before in the city.

There are many cute bridges and docks which I think were so fitting for the romantic/ scenic look we were going for.

Happy: How did you land on the visual style and aesthetics of the “Night Trip” video?

Meduulla: The 90’s feel of the song made me want to incorporate vintage footage that was actually taken on a VHS camera and also the Joey Badass Show Me video was a big inspo.

Happy: Were there any specific references that influenced the visual direction?

Meduulla: I wanted to capture the feeling felt in films such as Honey or Love and Basketball. The window shot was crucial because so many romcoms have a similar scene where 2 love interests are talking to each other through a bedroom window.

Happy: Can you share any interesting or memorable moments from the filming of the music video?

Meduulla: I remember when we were walking past some of the boats in the river, they were so pretty and we didn’t know if we’d be allowed to film some footage on there.

Luckily we found a boat that wasn’t lived in and was actually up for sale so we took our chances, did a little guerilla filming and shot some footage before we got caught.

This turned out to be some of my favourite shots.

Happy: Were there any unplanned elements that made it into the final cut?

Meduulla: The shots on the outdoor steps were unplanned, we just walked passed and thought it could be a cute cut, and it was.
