With just three songs under his belt, 19 year-old Yorkshireman, Yungblud, is making waves well beyond his years around the world right now. This week he paid a sneaky visit to Australia, where he had a chat with triple j’s Gen and Lewis, and played a secret showcase in Sydney that looked like it went off.
With just three songs under his belt, 19 year old Yorkshireman, Yungblud, is making waves well beyond his years around the world right now.
Churning a raucous blend of punk, hip-hop, ska, Yungblud pulls some obvious comparisons to the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T, and Jake Bugg. His latest singles I Love You, Will You Marry Me and Tin Pan Boy has been getting blasted on triple j too, and it’s looking like Australia isn’t far off a sweeping love affair with the scrappy Northerner.
I Love You, Will You Marry Me tells a corrupt, modern-day love story, with a super catchy chorus and infectious energy. Tin Pan Boy, on the other hand, sees Yungblud taking a stab at developers threatening to destroy the cultural hub of Denmark St in London.
Chatting about the track, Yungblud says:
“I spent most of my childhood on Denmark Street, Soho, London, it’s where I first picked up a guitar. At the moment there is a massive redevelopment going on which will eventually force a lot of independent businesses out of the area – I have a real connection to all the music and art stores and to see people trying to tear out its soul makes me super upset and really pissed off.
Tin Pan Alley is literally where the foundations of British rock and roll and the pop music that we know today were built. Everyone from Jagger to Lennon to the Sex Pistols used to hang out there. To sit back and watch it happen without saying something is not an idea that I’m into.”
