Mr Twin Sister – Blush

Twin Sister have probably soundtracked some of your most perfect summer moments without you even knowing it. A listen to their 2011 record In Heaven may call to mind your first kiss, a long-forgotten New Year’s resolution, or that slightly existential bittersweet feeling that this is these are the best days of your life and they will end one day.

mr twin sister

A morose indie-rock single from New York rhyme-lovers Mr. Twin Sister ahead of their forthcoming self titled record.

The album covered a lot of musical territory in under 36 minutes – from dream pop to a slightly more morose indie rock to electronica with a modicum of garage rock. In Heaven was a soft, delicate example of the New York-based five-piece’s ability to write music that didn’t scream or shout for attention; it had a natural intrigue that would draw people towards itself.

Now, after a period of curious dormancy, the band has re-emerged into the public eye with a new name and an unanticipated new sound. Mr Twin Sister (as they shall be henceforth known, both in this article and in general) is still the same group that supplied the OST to your halcyon days, but they’re no longer the background band – they’re making themselves the feature act.

Out of the Dark is the first single from Mr Twin Sister’s forthcoming self-titled record. It’s an eerie dancefloor cut loaded with minimalist electro-pop instrumentation, complemented by frontwoman Andrea Estella’s robotic, octaved vocals.

The track pulsates and lurches in a menacing fashion, as fragments of potentially larger synth or guitar parts tease you with their brief but essential contributions to the track. There’s an undeniable Kraftwerk-esque vibe going on in this song that pays homage to the origins of electronic music wonderfully, but in the creepiest possible fashion.

Blush is a second, tantalizing taste from the new album. It’s a suggestive lounge music arrangement that breathes; it inhales and exhales with its unwavering R&B string composition and phased-out rhodes piano. Crowned with Estella’s syrupy, amorous vocals, this track might be the closest music will ever get to being NSFW without sampling audio from actual naughtytimes (I’m looking at you, Kanye West).

If the first two tracks are any indication of what one can expect from Mr Twin Sister’s 2nd record, this album will prove to be one of the most masterful, genre-bending releases to reach our ears in 2014.
