Mumbledust

Mumbledust create a tranquil landscape through their music, where candles gently flicker, people gather, hands and flower headbands are worn in replacement of diamonds rings. Not afraid to delve into silence, the duo manipulate the thin layers of their instruments to produce a fragile and wispy tone.

Oh, whattaya know, another pearl from Furious Hooves. This time round, its soft folk-noir duo Mumbledust.

Although Mumbledust’s music is quite simplistic, their success lies in their basic recipe; a soothing, husky male voice complemented by shaky female harmonies, chords steadily plucked by a steel fabrication acoustic guitar and a bright accordion appearing from a comfortable distance. Nothing is cooler than a banjo played right, and Mumbledust have mastered the folk-noir genre with everything perfomed as brightly and muddy as you’d hear in the traditional style, influenced by the OG, Memphis, Tennessee.

The dual vocals of the band create beautiful harmonies and a buzzing folk-themed twang, which is rightfully paired with the always humble acoustic guitar. Strangely haunting yet undoubtedly beautiful, I have the most vivid image of them in my mind, where they are sitting, illuminated by an orange fire, strumming a beat up, an old acoustic guitar.

Not too far from my idealistic impression, the duo find refuge in Savannah, Georgia, a small town which is as artistic as it is haunted. Mumbledust needn’t bargain with the devil for their unique sound, as they are instantly distinguishable. All it takes is a single note from singer Rachel Perisho to match the voice to the name. Treat yourself to your own holiday with their new EP Alternate Vacations, released in early March.

You can purchase it for the small sum of $3 USD from their Bandcamp. For more soothing symphonies, check out Rachel Perisho’s debut solo EP In All The Ways That I Am Small, which features intricate vocal lines matched with fragile piano and eerie synths.
