Forest Falls deliver cinematic genre-bending brilliance on Modern Love

Forest Falls‘ big, bold and heartrendingly honest sound is a euphoric blend of multi-part vocal harmonies interwoven with a warmly orchestrated palette of guitars, keyboards, strings and sparkling, synth-laden beats.

Marking a distinct evolution to their 2015 EP Hounds, comes their new EP Modern Love, a driving alt-pop masterpiece that showcases the band’s diversity and extraordinary musicianship.

Australian Alt-Pop Powerhouse Forest Falls take you on a beautifully striking and emotive journey on their new EP Modern Love.

Australian alt-pop trio Forest Falls have previously performed massive support shows with Husky and Paper Lions, appeared on stage at Melbourne’s St Kilda Fest, performed sold-out tour shows all over Australia, received Best Band, Best EP, and Best Live Performance honors, and featured in coveted slots on Balcony TV, Vulture TV, and ABC Radio Melbourne.

The band is made up of Jon O’Neill, Jeremy Hallett, and Lucy Rash. Each member brings a rich musical history and solid set of instrumental skills to the table, coming together to create a striking and memorable genre-bending signature sound.

Forest Falls’ heavenly new EP Modern Love is subtle yet punchy, with intricate vocal arrangements and harmonies layered upon cinematic strings and 80s-infused guitar tracks that “go unapologetically nuts… we flipped a fond bird to subtlety while writing this record.” This big, bright and hooky EP combines the expansiveness, flair and self-assuredness of Phil Collins with the Disco-era sheen and the indie throes of Arcade Fire’s Funeral.

Bold and refreshingly unsuppressed, there’s a conceptual feel to the narrative of this five-track EP. It will take you on a journey of love and it’s many colours.

Lady Luck and Never Gonna Let You Go are exquisitely warm numbers that will take you straight to cloud nine, as they evoke a kind of blissful nostalgia. Never Ending Love is a catchy and buoyant synth-driven track reminiscent of ‘80s power-pop, which, despite being about heartbreak, feels carefree. Or Maybe I Do is a beautiful concoction of Tame Impala-esque vocal treatment, pulsating synth rhythms and groove-soaked bass.

“There’s a huge lack of love in the world right now and by writing this record we wanted to do all we could to better cultivate it,” says Jon O’Neill, the band’s vocalist. “You’ll find songs about romantic stereotypes, beautiful relationships, and amazing cats… we cover it all”.

With the release of the new EP, Forest Falls joins Gaga Digi’s roster of choice Australian artists including Laura Jean, Big Scary and The Harpoons.

Produced in the band’s own studio and mixed by Steven Schram (Mildlife, San Cisco), Modern Love is out now. Do yourself a favour and check out the EP above.
