Since forming in early 2018, Whyalla, South Australia-based outfit The Scoundrels have carved out a unique space for themselves in the world of indie-rock. With a string of consistently great singles under their collective belt, the band have crafted a unique brand of music that feels equal parts grounded and explorative. It’s rooted in rock, but reaches far wider.

Now, with the release of their debut EP It’s Not That I Don’t Want It, I Just Didn’t Expect It… the band continue to build themselves as one of Aussie rock music’s most exciting emerging acts. If you’re not already across this band, we strongly recommend you change that now.

On their debut EP It’s Not That I Don’t Want It, I Just Didn’t Expect It…, South Australia-based outfit The Scoundrels present a slice of alt-rock brilliance.

Throughout the new EP, The Scoundrels navigate a captivating blend of genres to deliver a sound uniquely their own. With rich instrumental arrangements and resonant vocal melodies, It’s Not That I Don’t Want It, I Just Didn’t Expect It… is the kind of EP that you can really sink your teeth into.

Across the EP’s six-track duration, the band pull in myriad sonic directions—they never sit in one place for too long. EP opener When You’re Not Alone is an immersive, slow-burning number that will seep into your bones and stay there for weeks. Sail Away, on the other hand, is reminiscent of Disintegration-era The Cure, showcasing their penchant for punchy arrangements.

By the time the EP’s closing track If It’s Over (Kill It) reaches its epic conclusion, you’ll have been roped in completely by The Scoundrel’s captivating music.

These are still early days for this South Australian band, but judging the quality of everything we’ve heard so far, I think we can safely expect plenty more great tunes. In the meantime, do yourself a favour and listen to It’s Not That I Don’t Want It, I Just Didn’t Expect It… above.
