UNTOLD: Raygun: Breaking Badly goes back inside the Olympic performance that became a meme and then some.
Raygun is still pretty much the only thing I remember from the 2024 Olympics.
You couldn’t open socials without seeing that routine somewhere, the kangaroo hop, the floor work, the same few seconds doing the rounds again and again.
My jaw dropped too. Most people’s did. Even now, there’s still a little residual cringe attached to it.
But the whole thing got pretty ugly, pretty quickly.
Netflix is now going back over what happened with UNTOLD: Raygun: Breaking Badly, a standalone documentary about Australian breaker Rachael Gunn and the internet storm that followed her appearance at the Paris Olympics. It lands globally on September 1.
And before you do a double take, Breaking Badly is really the title.
Gunn became one of the most recognisable faces of Paris 2024 after breaking made its Olympic debut. Competing as B-Girl Raygun, she scored zero points across her three battles, and her performance was clipped, memed and reposted almost immediately.
Then the jokes turned into conspiracy theories.
Claims spread that Gunn had rigged her way into the Games, that her husband and coach Samuel Free had judged the qualifier, and that the pair had manipulated Australia’s breaking system to secure her spot.
Those claims were false. Gunn qualified by winning the 2023 Oceania Breaking Championships, and the Australian Olympic Committee later condemned a viral petition built around the rumours as misleading and bullying.
That gap between what actually happened and what the internet decided had happened is where the documentary gets interesting.
Directed by Chapman Way and Maclain Way, Breaking Badly traces Gunn’s path from academic and competitive breaker to one of Australia’s strangest overnight celebrities, while looking at the memes, misinformation and backlash that followed.
We’ve all seen the routine by now. The more interesting question is what happens when a few awkward minutes at the Olympics become the thing millions of people decide they know you for.
