When Buzz Aldrin made his revolutionary first steps on the surface of the moon, he remarked of the moment as “magnificent desolation”; astonished by the space and distance, both physically and emotionally, from all those around him.
The relevance of this remark speaks volumes about the music I am about to introduce to you; a band which at their core are about creating a trance of colours and emotions to span the peculiarities of the human condition. In turn, they separate the listener from their mundane existence and into a dream of new age psychedelic expression.
One listen to North Circular and you’ll feel immediately transported to a drizzly playground of a housing commission the outskirts of London (in a good way).
Real Lies are three guys from north London who have managed to translate the euphoria of being high at a house party at 3 am into a four-minute baggy dance tune. Just like any well-loosened DJ, they’re not afraid to let their beats get lubricated. They’ve put out two singles –Deeper and World Peace – and both sound like the sort of thing that no one else is making, but everyone should be hearing.
Best described as the sound of next weekend and last weekend rolled into one, these two tracks in particular should be sourced and put on the stereo when arriving home bleary-eyed and cold-hearted.
The band sits within the well-developed vein of electro-pop, with their dreamy melodies and the haunting yet triumphant lead vocals. Combined, it manages to be both easy to groove to as well as retaining a higher pedigree in its production. Real Lies stand out amongst the sea of writing style that is associated with archetypal electronic pop music.
Real Lies are a band who have shown great promise on their material to date. What they have produced and shared on Soundcloud is one of the finest debut singles I have come across in quite some time. Hazily atmospheric and musically transcending, this is a band which will take you away from your deepest demons, and place you exactly where you need to be.
