Sam Smith & Kim Petras make LGBTQ+ history on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart

Sam Smith and Kim Petras are the first openly non-binary and trans solo artists to hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 song chart.

Earlier this month, Sam Smith and Kim Petras reached the top spot on Billboard’s Global 200 chart with their collaborative pop hit, Unholy.

Now, the dynamic duo has dominated the charts once again, except this time, they’ve made LGBTQ+ history by becoming the first openly non-binary soloist, and the first openly transgender soloist, respectively, to reach No. 1 Billboard’s Hot 100 song chart, since its establishment in 1991.

As Kim Petras told Billboard last week, “I just really don’t want to be the last. There’s always been incredible and talented trans artists.” Reflecting on the experience of creating Unholy alongside Smith, Petras continued, “It’s such a magical collaboration for me, because it was really a situation where Sam and I were really just connecting and being slutty writers saying, no, we’re gonna do it our way.”

They added: “It’s been such a pleasant collaboration with someone I truly respect and feel very inspired by. I’m extremely happy for Sam — and of course for me, too.”
